How to Create a GST Number for Business Online

A GST number is a unique identification number. It is given to businesses under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system in India. GST refers to Goods and Services Tax. The GST number is also called GSTIN (GST Identification Number). This number is needed to collect tax from customers & file GST returns. If your business meets certain conditions you must register & get a GST number online. In this article, you will learn how to create a GST number for a business online.

What is a GST Number?

A GST number (GSTIN) is a 15-digit code given by the government to each registered business. It legally allows the business to collect & pay GST. The number is linked to PAN (Permanent Account Number). Once you register & get a GSTIN then you can issue GST invoices to your customers. You can also claim input tax credit if eligible.

Who Needs a GST Number?

You should know whether a business needs to register for GST before you apply for GST. Businesses must register for GST in these cases:

Your annual turnover is above the government limit. For example, ₹20 lakh for most states & ₹10 lakh in special category states.

You sell goods or services across state borders.

You sell on online marketplaces like Amazon or Flipkart.

You are a non-resident taxable person or agent of a supplier.

You want to claim input tax credit.

Documents Needed for GST Registration

Must have the right documents ready before filling the GST application. Here are the common documents required:

‍Identity and Address Proof

PAN card of the business owner or company.

Aadhaar card of the proprietor, partner, or director.

Passport size photograph of the applicant(s).

‍Business Details

Proof of business registration like Certificate of Incorporation or Partnership Deed.

Proof of the principal place of business like electricity bill, municipal khata copy, property tax receipt, rent or lease agreement.

‍Bank Details

Cancelled cheque or bank passbook first page.

‍Digital Signature or E-Verification

For companies and LLPs, Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).

For proprietors, you can use Aadhar OTP or EVC (Electronic Verification Code).

There is no government fee for GST registration through the official portal.

How to Apply for a GST Number Online

Following is the step by step process to apply for a GST number. By using the official GST portal (www.gst.gov.in).

‍Step 1: Go to the GST Portal

Visit the official government GST portal www.gst.gov.in. This is the site where all GST registration happens. You do not need to visit any tax office to apply.

‍Step 2: Start New Registration

Find the section for Services → Registration → New Registration or click the Register Now button. You will see Part A of the registration form.

‍Step 3: Fill Part A of the Form

In Part A, you will enter:

Type of applicant (taxpayer).

State & district where business is located.

Legal name of business (as in PAN).

PAN number.

Email address & mobile number for OTP verification.

After you enter these details then you will receive an OTP on your mobile & email. Enter the OTP to proceed. This will give a Temporary Reference Number (TRN). Note this TRN for later use.

‍Step 4: Complete Part B of the Form

Log back into the portal using the TRN. Now fill in Part B. It includes business address, details of partners or directors, bank details, and other business information.

‍Step 5: Upload Documents

Upload all the scanned documents listed earlier. The file size & format must meet portal rules.

‍Step 6: Sign & Submit

For companies & LLPs, use a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). For sole proprietors, use Aadhaar OTP or EVC to sign & submit.

‍Step 7: Get Application Reference Number

Once submitted then the system will generate an Application Reference Number (ARN). You will receive the ARN via email & phone.

‍Step 8: Track Your Application

You can track the status of your GST registration using the ARN on the GST portal.

What Happens After Submission

After you submit the application then a GST officer reviews your application. If additional information is needed then the officer may ask through the portal. Once everything is correct then the GST officer approves the application.

In many cases, registration is processed within 3 to 7 working days. If you complete Aadhaar authentication then it may be approved in 3 days under the new rules for low-risk businesses. After approval then you will get a GST registration certificate. This PDF shows your GSTIN number, business name & address.

How to Check or Download Your GST Certificate

Once your registration is approved then you can:

Go to Services → User Services → View/Download Certificate.

Click Download PDF to save your GST certificate.

This is the official proof of your GST registration.

Penalty for Not Registering

If you are required to register for GST but don't do it then the government may charge a penalty. This can be ₹10,000 or 10% of the tax due, whichever is higher. Collecting GST without registration may lead to higher penalties. You must register on time to avoid penalties.
