Revised Taxation on Popcorn Differential taxation on popcorn has emerged as a hot topic after the recent meeting of the GST Council. Here's how GST is applied:
Loose Popcorn: Sold in theatres and taxed at 5%.
GST on Branded Packaged Popcorn: 12%
Caramelized Popcorn: Sugar confectionery, taxed at 18%.
Further, when popcorn is sold along with movie tickets, a composite supply is identified which is charged at the GST rate applicable to the entry tickets. This clarification resolves state-wise differences in the taxation of popcorn.
Conclusion Numerous regulatory updates, technological advancements, and rate modifications have changed the landscape of the GST ecosystem. Such changes mean businesses have to adapt by utilizing simplified registration processes, being compliant with new e-way bills and e-invoice guidelines, and knowing how complicated tax treatments like those applied to popcorn work. Therefore, it is essential to stay current and proactive about the changing GST environment.
